Melting Efficiency Improvement

ABSTRACT
Energy losses during melting process can be as high as 40% in steel foundries, and can be 3 to 6 times the theoretical electrical energy requirement when considering energy losses during melting and casting operations. Researchers at the University of Missouri-Rolla are performing a comprehensive study of the variability in melting practices used by the steel foundry industry and evaluating the effects of this variability on energy consumption. This study will determine practices that are successful in reducing energy consumption and develop new melting practices/technologies to improve the energy efficiency of melting in steel foundry operations.
