Determination of Residual Stress and Softening Effects on the Life of Die Casting Dies

ABSTRACT
The objective of this project is to evaluate measurement methods and develop ways of reducing losses in die life caused by softening of the steel and build-up of residual stress. Researchers have identified and evaluated portable hardness tester with adequate range and resolution for in-situ measurement of softening in dies. They have mapped hardness in production dies, quantifying the softening effect and confirming substantial loss in hardness in the heat checked areas.
