Computer Process Model for the Cupola Furnace

ABSTRACT
With the help of a grant from the I&I program, S. Katz Associates, Inc. further developed a computer process model that integrates scrap metal process variables to accurately predict furnace output based on given inputs. The work involves model testing and revisions of improved algorithms describing SiC performance, and development of a much more user-friendly graphic user interface. There will be experimental studies to further refine the unit, and market development will be undertaken. The innovation is expected to optimize operations, and reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Description and computation of the temperature of metal and coke separately over the entire length of the cupola have been completed. All new screens for a user-friendly GUI interface have been developed. SiC briquettes have been machined and slags have been prepared to be studied and analyzed. Planned work will now focus on the completion of radiant heat transfer models, writing code to connect the new GUI to the FORTRAN model, and continuation of marketing efforts. The project scheduled for completion in December 2002.
