An increasing number of North American foundries are turning to permanent mold casting of copper-base alloys because of the better surface finish, precise and consistent dimensional control and improved mechanical properties. Copper-base alloys in permanent molds also reduce the environmental impacts associated with sand disposal.
This research is determining the mechanical properties, fracture toughness and fatigue properties of seven lead-free, copper-base engineering alloys in permanent molds. Mechanical properties data will enable their increased use in rigorous engineering applications. In addition, research is indicating that the properties of permanent molds are substantially different from sand molds -- more so than previously thought.
