Foundry Energy Assessments

ABSTRACT
The objective of this project was to develop procedures to minimize energy usage in the die casting industry and to determine the direct metal casting energy usage. The results was an Energy Users Manual to assist die casters in saving energy. Visit the NADCA Website http://www.diecasting.org to obtain a copy of the Energy User's Manual. Both non-process and process energy use were analyzed for sampled foundries. Non-process energy use included: building heat losses/gains, lighting, ventilation, and motor efficiency. Process Energy Uses include: melting, holding furnaces, die casting machines, ladle preheating, air compressors, and finishing operations. Researchers identified best practices and emerging technologies and energy savings recommendations. An Energy Manual and Excel Spreadsheet for die casters were developed.
