Casting Porosity-Free, Grain Refined Magnesium Alloys

ABSTRACT
Micro-porosity is the major source of scrap in magnesium castings without practical and effective process remedies. In order to identify the root causes for magnesium alloys and develop practical production remedies, researcher at the Case Western Reserve University will investigate two magnesium alloys, AZ91E and low beryllium AM50A, and perform computerized simulation to optimize the arrangement of risers and chills and determine the pouring temperature for generating a temperature gradient to reduce micro-porosity in magnesium castings.
